The phenomenon of joining cationic metal centers with organic molecules, large or small, is present in many different contexts. Both in the form of traditional coordination chemistry, as well as materials, then usually denoted as coordination polymers. Of course, such chemistry is not limited to the lab: it is also found in biological systems as metalloenzymes/metalloproteins. As such, metals play an important role in many biological processes.
