About Our Research (Prof. Mattias Edén’s Group)

We develop and apply solid-state NMR spectroscopy for studying structurally disordered materials (glasses, cements, porous materials). In our investigations of biomaterials, we combine advanced magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR experimentation with computer modeling for probing the structures of bioactive materials intended for the next-generation of bone/tooth implants, as well as for characterizing the bone-mineral-mimicking surface layer forming on their contact with simulated body fluids. The solid-state NMR instrumentation includes two wide-bore magnets (9.4 T and 14.1 T) with triple-channel Bruker Avance-III spectrometers and several MAS probeheads (ranging from 1.3 mm to 7 mm rotors).

Project Description

We are inviting a self-motivated and creative individual to apply for one postdoctoral opening on MAS NMR studies of natural and synthetic biomaterials. The project aims at understanding the similarities and differences between bone mineral and biomimetic carbonated calcium hydroxyapatite, the latter formed at the surface of bioactive glasses exposed to simulated body fluids. While primarily focused on routine and advanced solid-state MAS NMR experimentation, other characterization techniques will also be utilized, such as FTIR spectroscopy and electron microscopy.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

The applicant should have a PhD degree in Chemistry or Physics (or equivalent thereof) and a significant experience in solid-state NMR experimentation. The selection is based primarily on scientific excellence in the field of applied MAS NMR spectroscopy. Previous experience with biomaterials and/or with other characterization techniques is considered advantageous, but is not necessary. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated and creative person with a passion for solving challenging scientific problems.
