Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK), with about 150 employees, is a leading institution in materials synthesis and processing, structural characterization, and materials applications. It includes physical, inorganic, structural, and materials chemistry, the latter constituting one of the leading research directions at Stockholm University. Important characterization methods at the department today are X-ray, electron and neutron crystallography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and various spectroscopic methods.

Project description

The position will be associated with the projects Novel Multifunctional Materials for Solar Light Harvesting and Energy Conversion funded by Formas. The aim is to explore new methodology on design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or derived materials as electrocatalysts and photocatalysts. Structures and properties of the new materials will be determined by electron diffraction, which allows analysis of nanocrystals without growing large single crystals. The novel materials are expected to be used in green energy conversion and storage to reduce mankind environmental footprint and contribute to a sustainable society.

Main responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to be responsible for 1) design and synthesis of novel metal-organic frameworks, 2) characterization of the physical and chemical properties, 3) exploration of new concept for design metal-organic frameworks for energy conversion, and 4) determination of metal-organic framework structures. The postdoc is expected to work closely with other members in the group and collaborate with researchers from academia and industry. In addition to research works, you may also need to involve in scientific writing of publications and proposals, and take part in laboratory management.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish Ph.D., or an equivalent international degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Physical Chemistry or equivalent by the start date of the appointment.

Assessment criteria

The Ph.D. degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. The selection will be based primarily on scientific excellence. The successful candidate will join a large research team of students, postdocs, and junior researchers.

Preferred qualifications:

1. Strong background in metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and electrochemistry is preferred. Experience in crystallography and electron microscopy is a bonus, but not essential.

2. Material synthesis and characterization techniques (SCXRD, PXRD, SEM, TEM, N2/Ar isothermal adsorption, Raman spectrum, Infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrum, XPS).

3. Knowledges on topology and reticular chemistry for design of metal-organic frameworks.

4. Strong capacity to work independently, including designing and conducting experiments, preparing a high-quality scientific presentations and publications.

5. Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

6. Good skills in spoken and written English.

Terms of employment

This is a scholarship-funded project for at least one year, with the possibility of extension. Access April 2021 or by appointment.
