  • Workshop on small angle scattering studies of soft matter and nanostructured materials

    Thursday, Apr 18, 2013

18-19 April 2013 Sal E, Forum, KTH Kista, Kista, Stockholm

KTH Materials platform is together with Stockholm University, Uppsala University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Karolinska Institutet (KI) organizing a workshop on small angle scattering studies of soft matter and nanomaterials.

The workshop intends to bring together scientists at universities in the Stockholm-Uppsala region who are already utilizing small angle techinques, or who are interested in learning more about the topic.

The goals of the workshop are to:

    • Spread knowledge: Increase awareness of and knowledge about x-ray and neutron scattering techniques for soft matter research in the Uppsala-Stockholm region.
    • Identify research infrastructure needs: Clearly define a list of needs for experimental tools in the present and future soft matter and nanostructured materials research in the Uppsala-Sthlm region.

For more info and registration visit http://www.kth.se/en/forskning/forskningsplattformar/material/konferenser/softmaterialsworkshop or e-mail onsten@kth.se

Organising committee: Anneli Önsten (KTH-Kista), Magnus Bergström (KTH-Vallhalavägen) and Germán Salazar-Álvarez (SU).

  • Materials chemistry seminar: Programmed and multi-stable materials assembly

    Tuesday, Mar 19, 2013, 13:00

When: Tuesday march 19 at 13.00
Where: Room C516, Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm University

    Stoyan Smoukov,
Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy
    Cambridge University

    Abstract

We'll show a selection of recent discoveries in the fields of programmed nano- and micro-assembly to generate functional materials. Examples include rational assembly of nanoparticles, based on electrostatic functionalization and "nanoion" properties. Janus magnetic microparticles are synthesized and assembled into stable chains, as well as disassembled for later reuse. Macroscopic magnetic foams are assembled and for the first time remote destruction with magnetic fields is demonstrated. Special emphasis will be paid to design concepts for novel materials, such as multi-stability, disassembly and recyclability, and multiple functionalities.
